Before the dawn of a new year, I always like to take a moment to reflect on the passing year. 365 (or 366 days this year) around the sun go faster the older I get. Some days I feel like nothing beyond the ordinary happened. In reality they all add up to extraordinary days sprinkled throughout the year. Overall 2016 was a good year. Like any year it was full of ups and downs, triumphs and failures, love and loss.
Here are my top memories of 2016
1. Time spent with family.
We began the year together with family. It was unintended-the result of my grandmother’s passing. My sisters and I packed our families into our cars and drove on New Year’s Day 2016 to the mountains of Southwest Virginia. We all live in different states and while funerals aren’t the best time to get together with family, it was nice to begin the year together. Later in the year, Lady Elle and Mr. E&G took an overnight Amtrak train to Virginia in September to see my parents, sister and friends. I was in DC for work so I took the train down to meet them. Finally, as I write this, the cousins are once again reunited together in Destin–the first time we’ve spent Christmas together in more than 14 years. We are making memories as I write.
2. First trip to Disney.
Like good Floridians with children, we made the epic trip to Disney. Every trip to Disney is epic. Living in Florida we were able to go sans an airplane ride and weeklong hotel stay, but the crowds and cost are enough to make any trip to Disney an epic undertaking. Get my drift? I admit it, at 3.5 I wasn’t 100% sure Lady Elle was old enough for Disney and I’m not exactly a theme park person, so we strategically pulled the trigger when my husband had a free Hilton stay near Disney Springs in March. To my surprise, I loved watching my daughter enjoy Disney. Granted, our second trip in August was even better because we went toEpcot (alcohol-enough said). We haven’t yet become annual pass holders and I doubt it is in our future, but I do foresee a few more trips to the world of Disney.
3. PR life.
I don’t talk much about the day-to-day of my job. I love my job but it’s not something I focus on in my blog. However, this past year, I served as the President of the local association of the Florida Public Relations Association, a statewide public relations and communications organization for professionals. I poured my heart and soul into the role, I had an amazing board of directors and I had the support of my boss and my husband. It was a lot of work, but I learned a lot about myself and others. To my humble surprise, I was honored with the President of the Year award from the organization. Wow! I am still in awe.
4. Half-marathon PR.
In November 2015, I set a goal to run a sub two hour half marathon. I joined the Fleet Feet Sarasota training team and was diligent in my training for the Sarasota Music Half Marathon. I ran each long run with partners (Kim!) and didn’t miss a Tuesday night speed workout. It was a chilly and windy February day, not exactly elements for an optimal race, but that’s part of outdoor road racing. You can’t control the elements. I pushed hard and a PR of 1:57. 2017 will be a different story, but I’m not pushing myself as hard this time around.
5. Starting my blog.
Yes, I admit it’s been a slow go of it. I decided to give myself grace when beginning this blog. I know my readers may expect more posts from me but my family, health and my day job come first. I don’t want it to become a burden or stress in my life. I know my goal-driven, type-A personality will kick in at some point sooner or later, but for the time being, I’m taking it at my own pace and enjoying the ride.
2016 has been good to me and I know 2017 will be full of surprises and blessings as well. What were your favorite memories of 2016? I’d love to hear about them.
